Overview
Payslips can be confusing — especially if it’s your first job, you've changed tax settings, or something looks different than usual. This article helps you understand what each section of your payslip means so you can confidently review your earnings, deductions, and available leave.
Key Sections Explained
1. Pay Period
- Shows the start and end dates the payment covers.
- Example: 1–15 June 2025 or Monthly Pay Period: June 2025.
2. Gross Pay
- Your total earnings before deductions.
- Includes base salary, bonuses, overtime, and any allowances (e.g. travel, phone).
3. Deductions
Typical deductions include:
- Tax Withholding: Based on your jurisdiction and tax code.
- Retirement/Super Contributions: Automatically deducted if enrolled.
- Health Insurance: If you opted into company benefits.
- Other Deductions: Loan repayments, salary sacrifice items, etc.
These are itemized on your payslip.
4. Net Pay (Take-Home Pay)
- The actual amount paid to your bank account after all deductions.
- This is the total you'll see hit your bank account on payday.
5. Leave Balances
- Shows accrued leave such as:
- Annual/Vacation Leave
- Sick Leave
- Personal/Carer’s Leave
Leave accrual is updated per pay cycle and may be shown in hours or days, depending on your system.
Other Common Payslip Terms
- YTD (Year to Date): Totals for your earnings and deductions across the current financial year.
- PAYG / PAYE Tax: “Pay As You Go” or “Pay As You Earn” — income tax deducted each pay period.
- Reimbursements: Payments for expenses you've claimed (e.g. travel or supplies).
- Bank Details: Confirm the last 3–4 digits match your intended deposit account.
What to Look Out For
- Check for unexpected deductions or missing reimbursements.
- Verify that leave balances reflect any recently taken time off.
- If your pay seems incorrect, compare it against your contract or latest payroll communication.
- Notify HR immediately if your bank account details are wrong or if you didn’t receive your full pay.
